Wet food vs. Dry food

Mostly everyone will tell you that dry food is better than wet food, for all animals and not just cats. Many people have come to ask “why is dry food better?” There are different reasons why dry food is better than wet food. Wet food will cause your animal to have bad dental health, and we know that cats have to be under anesthesia whenever they get their teeth cleaned. Using dry food will cut down on the plaque build up making it less likely for your cat to get his/her teeth cleaned by a professional. Many people believe that animals need a variety of different type of foods [ex. Fish flavor, chicken flavor, beef flavor etc.], while a cats digestive system is more resilient than a dogs digestive system, they do not need variety. All variety will do is make your cat or dog very picky, and it will usually upset their stomach. Try to stick to one food as routine, and give the variety as a treat. There are many other reasons why dry food is better than wet food, if you would like to know more on the subject you should get some more insight from your vet.

Now on to the different brands of CAT food…..

Best foods

  1. BLUE BUFFALO- this gets an A+ [first three ingredients Deboned chicken, chicken meal, and whole ground brown rice.] * this has the best ingredients but something to talk to a vet about is that many of my associates informed me that some animals have allergies related to this food, so review this with your vet.*
  2. AUTHORITY- I give an A+ [first three ingredients: chicken, chicken meal, and rice.]
  3. BY NATURE- I give an A- [first three ingredients: chicken meal, ground barley, and chicken fat.]
  4. EUKANUBA- I give a B+ [first three ingredients: chicken, chicken liver and chicken by-products.]
  5. NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE- I give a B [chicken meal, rice, and corn gluten meal]
  6. PURINA PRO PLAN- gets a C [surprisingly not as bad as I thought: chicken, chicken by-product, and corn gluten meal].
  7. ROYAL CANIN- C [chicken meal, rice, corn gluten meal, GROUND CORN]
  8. NUTRO MAX- C [chicken meal, corn gluten meal, wheat].
  9. IAMS- C- [chicken, chicken by-product, corn meal].
  10. SCIENCE DIET NATURES BEST- D [corn gluten meal, chicken meal, animal fat].

Anything beyond this point isn’t worth considering

  1. SCIENCE DIET- [chicken byproduct, ground whole corn, animal fat.]
  2. almost anything Purina…just look at the first three ingredients
  3. whiskas (dry food)….
  4. meow mix

Award for the worst food

PURINA KIT-N- KABOODLES- this has almost absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever [ingredients include: yellow ground corn, corn gluten meal, then meat and bone meal.] this is the worst food I found in pets mart, or at least for my standards.

About this article

The foods in this article are purely based on the first three ingredients in the foods. Also the foods in this article are only based on the kitten formulas, so if your cat isn’t a kitten you should just look to this as a guideline. * this is also a disclaimer….claiming that I am not an expert, and if you want the best for your pet you should review your food choices with a vet [again this is only a mild guideline based on my own research.]* and as all pet parents want the best for their pets I’m sure that everyone reading this article will also do further research of your own.

Thanks

Stephanie

This article is the result of the research of a future Bengal kitten owner.  Stephanie so graciously did the research in her off hours from her job as a Petsmart associate. She is often asked the question that most pet owners ask “Which food is the best food for my pet?” She asked the question of me, I told her my opinion, adding that each pet owner must do the research and make their own decision based on budget and ingredients. Bodcau Bayou Bengals believes that each kitten and adult animal should be fed the very best food that their humans can afford. The question of ‘the best’ still remains very hard to understand, so we hope that ‘Stephanie’s research’ will help guide you but the responsibility is still yours.

ccc I might add Bodcau Bayou believes that wet food should also be a part of your kitten’s diet. Not the main ingredient but a part of their healthy diet. Here at the cattery we feed all of the kitten’s wet food because they will eat more of it at a time. Also, it is a great place to hide any medication or vitamins they need. Every cat or kitten gets a plate of wet food for dinner, it gives us a bonding time and it gives the cat/kitten something to look forward to. We feed ‘Life’s Abundance dry kibble’ here at the cattery; it is not available at Petsmart so not part of this research.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Stephanie for doing the research for all of us

and for giving it to me in such a nice understandable format. Thank you, Stephanie.
